As a fantasy realism artist, my creative process blends imagination with fine art techniques to bring dreamlike worlds into realistic familiar scenery. Collectors often ask how I create fantasy realism paintings—where the ideas come from, and what makes each piece unique. Today, I want to share a glimpse into my art process, from the first spark of inspiration to the final brushstroke.
Inspiration: Where Fantasy and Reality Meet
My work begins in a space between reality and imagination. Fantasy realism allows me to weave mythical themes, landscapes, and characters into believable atmospheric scenery. My Inspiration comes from places I’ve been, looking around at nature on a daily basis or even a dream. I keep a sketchbook nearby to capture ideas, whether it’s the curve of a mountain range, the glow of a sunset, or the mood of a story that sparks an image in my mind.
Sketching and Composition
Once I decide on an idea that peeks my imagination, I begin with sketches. These early drawings allow me to explore composition, perspective, color scheme and storytelling. Every detail matters to me where and how light falls across a landscape, or how colors will evoke emotion. I refine these sketches until the scene feels both otherworldly and believable.
The Underpainting
The next step is to start blocking in the scene from back to front.
Layering Color and Detail
Color brings the world to life. I work in layers, glazing and blending to achieve richness and depth. Light and shadows often play a central role—whether it’s the glow of a magical sky, the shimmer of water or ambient lighting bouncing off other objects in the scene. Each layer builds atmosphere and draws viewers deeper into the painting.
Fine Details
The final stages are where the magic happens. I focus on details that guide the eye and bring you into the atmosphere of the piece. These finishing touches bring emotion and believability to the work.
Why I Paint Fantasy Realism
Fantasy realism is more than creating beautiful images. It’s about transporting the viewers into another world that is familiar and extraordinary. My goal is to inspire wonder, spark imagination, and offer collectors a piece of timeless imagery captured on canvas.
